Oregon artist Aya Morton draws lifelong inspiration from Central Oregon’s landscapes, from childhood camping trips along the Metolius River to exploring the region’s volcanic formations, rivers, and cultural history. As a fourth‑generation Japanese American, Morton is also influenced by the colors, compositions, and environmental themes found in traditional Japanese printmaking—an artistic heritage that informs the clarity, balance, and atmospheric quality of her work. Her public art installations across Oregon and her illustration work for books, museums, and commercial clients reflect this blend of narrative sensitivity, place‑based observation, and refined visual storytelling.

For the Redmond Municipal Airport, Morton proposed a hand‑painted tile diptych inspired by her family’s longstanding connection to the Metolius River, a place she describes as timeless and almost otherworldly in its clarity and constancy. The artwork spans two walls, depicting the natural world above and below the waterline. From afar, the tiles read as a serene, light‑filled landscape; up close, travelers discover the nuanced hand‑painted detail of each individual tile. The installation is tailored to the site, incorporating custom tile cutouts around elements like drinking fountains and seating areas.
Using ceramic tile and durable enamel paints, Morton works collaboratively with installers and construction partners to bring the work to life at architectural scale. The result is an immersive, place‑rooted artwork that honors both the beauty of Central Oregon and the layered cultural influences that shape her artistic perspective.
