Sculptor Kyle Ocean creates concept‑driven, site‑specific work rooted in geographical exploration and public engagement. Based in western Washington, he brings together his background in printmaking, drawing, and large‑scale metalwork to craft sculptures that read from afar yet reward close inspection. Ocean is known for translating the graphic language of topographic lines and natural forms into expressive, three‑dimensional surfaces, using scale, cutouts, welded linework, and intricate patinas to evoke the landscape.
“It is with great pleasure that I have been chosen to be part of this incredible project and to showcase my artwork in such a special place. This part of Oregon has always been my favorite place to enjoy and explore, and will forever have a special place in my life. I plan to use the natural beauty of the area and landscape to express in my artwork, and couldn’t be happier to be part of such a cool project along with a very talented pool of artists.”
For the Redmond Municipal Airport, Ocean proposed a series of steel panels that span the wall at the top of the escalators, designed as a continuous composition anchored by the path of the Deschutes River. Layered steel elements, recessed channels, and welded topography echo the region’s defining features—including Smith Rock, the Crooked River, and the Cascade peaks—inviting travelers to move closer and trace the flow of the landscape across the panels. His signature patina process adds depth and complexity, aging the steel in ways that reveal the material’s character and connect it to the natural world. His goal is to offer travelers a sculptural experience that reflects the expansive landscape just beyond the terminal.
