Redmond, OR – Redmond Municipal Airport (RDM) officially launched its highly anticipated terminal expansion project with a demolition event on Wednesday, June 18 at 8:30 am, symbolizing the major transformation ahead for Central Oregon’s gateway to the sky. This symbolic demolition marks the official start of RDM’s multi-phase expansion project, which will significantly increase terminal capacity, enhance ADA accessibility, and elevate the travel experience for the region’s growing number of passengers.
The event will included remarks and participation from the Mayor Ed Fitch, Redmond City Council, members of the Airport Committee and Margaret Schinkel, the granddaughter of JR Roberts, for whom the airport is named. Roberts was a pioneering city leader and aviation advocate whose early contributions helped establish Redmond as a regional hub for air travel.
“With this expansion, we’re not just preparing for the future – we’re shaping it.” said Mayor Ed Fitch. “Redmond Airport is a critical gateway for Central Oregon, and this project ensures we continue to meet the needs of our communities with vision, care and forward-thinking infrastructure.”

The terminal expansion project is scheduled for phased construction through 2027, opening in early 2028, with early construction impacts beginning this summer. Key improvements include additional gates and jet bridges, improved passenger flow, expanded hold room area, and upgraded amenities designed to create a more comfortable, efficient and inclusive travel experience.
